About Us
HRFFC is a small village club with about 50 members. The majority of the fishing is on the River Leven, a spate river running off the North Yorkshire moors and joining the River Tees near Yarm.
The club was founded in 1920 with the objective of providing local people affordable fly fishing for trout. Throughout it’s life it has owed its fishing rights and existence to the generosity of local people. There has been a remarkable continuity of service by the Club’s officers: the first Secretary of the Club was Tom Milburn, grandfather of the late Barry Milburn, who became Treasurer himself in 1962 finally resigning in 2013 after 50 years in post.
THE FISHING
The Club’s historic fishing is about two miles long, running through Hutton Rudby village downstream towards Crathorne. More recently additional water has been secured, both on the Leven and on another Tees tributary so we currently have access to approximately six and a half miles of river in total.
The waters are all wild and beautiful, as well as enjoying the fishing you may well encounter deer, otters, kingfishers and dippers to name a few and there is very diverse wild flower and plant life.
The Club has an ethos of continual habitat improvement which we conduct in partnership with the Environment Agency and the Tees Rivers Trust. We also work with the Wild Trout Trust and won their prestigious Conservation Award in 2019. We do not stock so all the fish are entirely indigenous.
The Club waters are open for fishing in accordance with the Environment Agency regulations: 22nd March to 30th September for Trout and 16th June to 14th March for Grayling, dates inclusive. The latter is restricted to one two mile beat.
Fishing is by artificial fly only, all fish are to be returned unharmed. Hooks used must have any barb crushed, proper barbless hooks are preferred.
